Sugar, Butter, Flour

Being it’s Christmas time, I know a lot of people will bake and create all different kinds of goodies to give to those they care about. I have friends who spend hours upon hours upon hours in the kitchen to be sure they share something made with love with everyone they interact with.

Me? My idea of baking is buying a box mix, adding the minimal ingredients, asking one of my kids to stir for a few minutes, and voila! Done! It might not taste as good as homemade, but it does the job.

But what makes something meaningful? Is it when it’s easy or is it when you put in the real work to create something great?

I have learned that relationships are a lot like baking. Not just romantic relationships, but relationships in general. Relationships take work. Hard work. Time and more time. Effort and more effort. But just like that plate of homemade goodies, the results are always worth it.

I think as a society, we tend to take the easy route, the path of least resistance. We put in only what is required, negating that the work, time and effort will make the results so much better. We skimp on the real ingredients needed to make something great.

All that being said, while I may present those I care about with something good, more is required to gift what they deserve.
