Lessons Learned: My WHY

While on a first date several months back, I was asked “What is your hobby?”

I didn’t have an immediate response. Maybe it was the context of the conversation or the inflection used, but I really thought about the definition behind the word- an activity done regularly in one’s leisure time for pleasure.  “Hmmm…”

I don’t know. My passion has always been writing, but I don’t do it often, so I don’t think that qualifies as a hobby. .. Maybe cooking… But while I love to cook, especially big meals for friends and family, yet again, not something I do very often now that my kids no longer live with me…

And then it hit me. A genuine aha moment! I do a lot of things, some well, and some not so well, and I enjoy doing them, but one thing I do more often than not that I truly enjoy… “Dating. Dating is my hobby.”

I don’t think he cared for my answer…

My ‘WHY

I am not an expert on life. That is not why I am here. And I am definitely not an expert on men. Yes, I have all but perfected the first date, but again, not why I am here.

I want out of the box.

You know… the box. The place we stick all the stuff that happens in life. People. Places. Events. Love. Heartbreak. Happiness. Pain. You. Me. Us.

Life teaches us so much if we allow it. Sometimes we win. Sometimes we lose. Some lessons take multiple years. Some only moments. But in every happening, life has a lesson.

So several months, and many first dates later, I have decided it’s time for a new hobby….
